While I experienced my share of doubts and mishaps, the experience proved quite valuable in the end.My friends and family did not understand why I chose Miami, having turned down â€Å"higher- ranked† schools. They constantly reminded me that Miami is a â€Å"party school† and pressured me to feel that I would not be satisfied there. I considered myself a high-achievi ng student, so I feared my academic needs would not be fully met. However, I had heard from a current UMiami student that the school’s course rigor was fairly high. That awful month taugh t me to persevere like never before.As if the bronchitis was not bad enough, I had to nurse a chemical burn from an unfortunate gameday mishap involving a leaky fire extinguisher. Five trips to the Health Center in a month made concentrating on schoolwork incredibly difficult. The bronchitis and burn overlapped, so learning effective time management became essential to my sanity.MAKING NEW FRIENDSLeaving old friends behind and finding new ones was another tough part of the transition to college. Before orientation, I constantly worried about making new friends, knowing I was essentially starting over. I consider myself an introvert; even though I love meeting new people, I have a hard time forming new relationships from scratch. My high school class had 200 people; everyone knew everyone. I had close friends in every class, so making and maintaining friendships was easy.When the semester started, I found myself making friends everywhere I went—that girl I took my Cane ID phot o with, the girl I stood in line behind at the club fair, and the guy who attended my rival high school. The peaceful transition of power from one United States president and his administration to another is one of the hallmarks of American democracy. And much of the publics and medias attention on January 20th every four years rightly focuses on the incoming president taking the Oath of Office and the challenges that lie ahead. But what does the outgoing president do on his last day in office? Heres a look at five things almost every president does just before leaving the White House. 1. Issues a Pardon or Two   Some presidents show up at the White House bright and early for a ceremonial last walk through the historic building and to wish their staff well. Others show up and get to work issuing pardons. President Bill Clinton used his last day in office, for example, to pardon 141 people including Marc Rich, a billionaire who had been indicted on charges of defrauding the Internal Revenue Service, mail fraud, tax evasion, racketeering, defrauding the U.S. Treasury and trading with the enemy. President George W. Bush also issued a couple  of pardons in the last hours of his presidency. They  erased the prison sentences of two border patrol agents convicted of shooting a drug suspect. 2. Welcomes the Incoming President Recent presidents have hosted their eventual successors on the last day in office. On Jan. 20, 2009, President Bush and  First Lady Laura Bush hosted President-Elect Barack Obama and his wife, as well as Vice President-Elect Joe Biden, for coffee in the Blue Room of the White House  before  the noon  inauguration. The president and his successor then traveled together to the Capitol in a limousine for the inauguration. 3. Leaves a Note for the New President Its become a ritual for the outgoing president to leave a note for the incoming president. In January 2009, for example, outgoing President George W. Bush wished incoming President Barack Obama well on the fabulous new chapter he was about to begin in his life, Bush aides told The Associated Press at the time. The note was tucked into a drawer of Obamas Oval Office desk. 4. Attends the Inauguration of the Incoming President The outgoing president and vice president attend the swearing-in and inauguration of the new president and then are escorted from the Capitol by their successors. The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies describes the outgoing presidents department as being relatively anti-climatic and unceremonious. The 1889 Handbook of Official and Social Etiquette and Public Ceremonies at Washington described the event this way:   His departure from the Capital is attended with no ceremony, other than the presence of the members of his late Cabinet and a few officials and personal friends. Takes a Helicopter Ride Out of Washington Its been customary since 1977, when Gerald Ford was leaving office,  for the president to be flown from the Capitol grounds via Marine One to Andrews Air Force Base for a flight back to his hometown. One of the most memorable anecdotes about such a trip came from Ronald Reagans ceremonial flight around Washington on Jan. 20, 1989, after he left office. In the U.S. there are approximately 200million privately owned guns, which is statistically close to a gun perperson and places more than one gun per home on average (ODonnell 771). In other words, guns are all around. This effects, without a doubt, thewhole society structure and the citizens that live within its boundaries. The children that live within a gun infestedsociety are going to suffer the consequences. In fact, kids between theages 16 and 19 have the highest handgun victimization rate among all agegroups (ODonnel 771). Its not hard to understand why, since there areon average more than one gun per household, kids are likely to find firearmand in some cases even use it. In March 1998 two children, 11 and 13 yearsof age gunned down a total of 13 people in a school in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Of the 13, nine survived and five people, classmates and teacher, diedas a result of the shooting (Liesen, Owens). One of the boys had takentwo rifles from his grandfather. They positioned themselves about a 100yards from the schoolyard and when the bell for recession sounded and peoplestarted to exit the school building the two boys opened fire. This is ahorrendous event that proves that if guns are present within a householdor within a family, odds are that kids will know about where they are keptand perhaps even be curious enough to actually use them. In October, 1997 a 16 year old boy shotand killed his girlfriend and her best friend while they were exiting aMississippi school leaving six others wounded (Liesen, Owens). The spontaneityof young children and guns are a lethal combination as illustrated in thesetwo examples. In a study made across high schools inSeattle, 47% of males and 22% of females reported that they had easy accessto handguns and 11.4% were gun-owning males (ODonnel 772). The accessto guns might prove to be a deadly for both innocent bystanders and theholder of the gun. Children should not be able to own guns. One of theprerequisites for owning a gun should be that the person is responsibleenough to own a firearm. Since there are no guarantees for that, guns shouldonly be issued in extensively controlled forms otherwise the governmentjeopardizes the safety of the people theyve sworn to protect. In ages 10-14 72%, and in the ages 15-19,85% of all homicides are committed with firearms. In addition to that 60% of all suicides among youths is committed with a handgun. The total firearmdeath rate concerning white males in their teens now exceed natural causes(ODonnell 771). The American public is feeling thehorrendous effects of violence that the second Amendment brings and manyrealize that something has to be done to decrease the annual death tolldue to guns. The Gun Control Act of 1968 was attemptby the government to restrict the sale of guns by making sellers of gunslicensed and prohibited the sale of guns or ammunition to people that areconvicted felons, minors, drug users, illegal aliens or people who havebeen discharged from the military. This Act was passed during the wakeof the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King and Senator Robert Kennedy. It was huge reaction to a growing usage of handguns in the U.S. The legislatorsfigured out that the liberty of bearing arms wasnt for everyone. In observing a Japanese garden, it is important to remember that the line between the garden and the landscape that surrounds it is not separate. Instead, the two are forever merged, serving as the total embodiment of the one another. Every aspect of the landscape is in itself a garden. Also when observing the garden, the visitor is not supposed to distinguish the garden from its architecture. Gardens in Japan incorporate both natural and artificial elements, therefor uniting nature and architecture into one entity. Early Life Rosalind Franklin was born in London. Her family was well-off; her father worked as a banker with socialist leanings and taught at the Working Mens College. Her family was active in the public sphere. A paternal great-uncle was the first practicing Jew to serve in the British Cabinet. An aunt was involved with the womens suffrage movement and trade union organizing. Her parents were involved in resettling Jews from Europe. Studies Rosalind Franklin developed her interest in science at school, and by age 15 she decided to become a chemist. She had to overcome the opposition of her father, who did not want her to attend college or become a scientist; he preferred that she go into social work. She earned her Ph.D. in chemistry in 1945 at Cambridge. A Homegrown Writing Retreat Ah, the writers retreat! A four-star hotel with room service, or maybe just an idyllic cabin in the woods, with meals delivered on tippy-toe so as not to disturb the Muse. What you couldnt get done in such an environment – provided you can afford the fees and travel costs, and make it past the waiting list. If you cant, dont despair. For the last six years my writers group has held three or four retreats a year: spring, summer, fall and sometimes also winter. Its simple, inexpensive, and very, very effective. Most of us who attend the retreats write daily, and professionally. The retreats allow us to kick-start a new project or make major progress on an existing one. Heres what you need for your own retreat: ==At least three writers committed to showing up all three days. Four, five or six reduces the work per person. More than that would probably be unwieldy. ==A space big enough for everyone to write in, with facilities for meals. Ours is the living room in the home of two of our writers. You might also be able to use a church hall or some other community space that has a kitchen. ==A meal plan. Ours is done a week ahead so everyone knows what meals theyll be responsible for. Meals are scheduled: breakfast 8 a.m., lunch 1 p.m., supper 6 p.m. Theyre also simple, and as much as possible, made ahead. The person responsible for the next meal cleans up from the last one, which means you know where you put the cheese grater or the big spoon. We try to keep breakfast and lunch self-serve, and gather for conversation and readings at dinner. ==A project, and whatever research materials, notes or so on you require, plus your writing tools of choice. We list food sensitivities and dislikes on the meal plan. We also ban television, movies, radio, phone calls and music except with headphones. Visitors are discouraged, and any conversation has to be away from the writing area. Alcohol comes out only in moderation with dinner, where we read aloud from the days work and cheer each other on. Three of us are hard-core and attend every day of every retreat. Three or four others regularly show up for a day or two (with a meal and cleanup). The work is minimal – at worst, one meal and one cleanup per day. Its not unusual to have a day on which youre not responsible for any kitchen work. As for cost, I live fifteen miles from the retreat location and usually do two meals and provide some snacks (fruit, nuts or biscotti, plus dark chocolate). My total costs for the weekend are $60-$80 in gas and food. If my friends guest room is available, its less than that. Results? They can be amazing. I regularly get two weeks worth of writing done in three days. Ive polished a manuscript for publication, written 80 percent of a non-fiction book and ploughed through more pages than I can remember. My colleagues have had similar results. While its my daily writing practice that keeps me productive and sharp, the retreats help me remember that there are others out there sharing this creative life. I come out of a retreat refreshed and re- committed. The camaraderie eases the usual loneliness of the writers work, the feedback warms the heart. And the production doesnt hurt, either.

Social network sites allow users to choose the people who will become part of their network. These associations form the communities.Choosing Friends in social network sites give the users a chance to write their communities into being. (Boyd). SNS creates and improves communities based on similarities between users. Some sites such as MySpace connect people based on shared interest s. (Ellison et al)Also some sites such as Facebook allow its members to, â€Å"Join virtual groups based on common interests, see what classes they have in common, and learn each others' hobbies, interests, musical tastes, and romantic relationship status through the profiles.† (Ellison et al)Social network sites are advantageous because they allow users to create their identity and space. Through the profiles, the users are able to create an image of themselves. Their profile page is their space, defined they way they want and containing the things they want.More importantly, the user’s social network is his space and he has the ability to change it simply by adding or removing people from his list. His social network defines his identity as well.
